Osun VGN Commandant Calls for Security Consciousness to End Current Security Challenges

The Osun State Commandant, Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Alhaji Oyedokun Mukaila-Adebamigbe has identified vigorous security consciousness among Nigerians as an antidote to security challenges currently facing the country.

Adebamigbe stated this during the official presentation of certificate of awards to 15 newly appointed state executives and three Zonal Commandants held at the VGN headquarter, Ayetoro in Osogbo.

He called on the people of Osun and entire citizens of the country to always report any suspicious or strange movement of an unidentified person in their environments to the police or any other security agency, saying that security matter should not be taken with levity hand.

The VGN commandant said it is incumbent upon every individual to take security matter serious so as to curb the menace of insecurity in Nigeria, adding that vigilance on the part of the people of the country became necessary as security challenges in Nigeria and Africa at large continued to be on the increase.

Emphasizing the need for more harmonious relationship between the police and the group, Adebamigbe stated that the police and the vigilante group have been enjoying good relationship on security matters for a long period of time.

According to him, such relationship will help the police in discharging their obligation of protecting people and their property better.

He maintained that the only way Nigeria can survive the present security condition was to come out strongly and in unison to fight insecurity to standstill.

"It is paramount to maintain utmost vigilance as individuals in our respective abodes, security of our lives and property is too important to be left in the hands of security agencies alone”, he said.

Adebamigbe expressed the VGN’s readiness to continue to support Nigerian army in the ongoing fight against the deadly Boko Haram insurgents, and to rescue all the Chibok Girls and conquer the sects if the Federal Government gives them necessary support.

He assured Nigerians of the VGN’s determination to ensure the reduction of crimes in every part of the country to the barest minimum, noting that the group has demonstrated its capabilities with the rescue of the first Chibok girl, Amina Alli from Sambisa forest.

“We are ready to face Boko Haram sects if government provides us all necessary supports. We are determined to combat them if the federal government gives us adequate support”, he said.

The commandant urged the federal government to fast-track the passage of the bill before the National Assembly to enact the VGN as a security group, saying such gesture would encourage the group to work harder.

Part of their laudable achievements recorded by the group according to the Commandant were, discovering of Indian Helps farms in a joint operation with NDLA and NSCDC at Ikire, Irewole local government of the state, voiding of bank robbery in Modakeke, Sammya construction company, Alasan and Ile-Ife and the arrest of the suspects respectively.

He therefore advised the newly appointed executives, the zonal commandants and all other members of the group to be loyal to the constituent authority, security agents and cooperate with all the stakeholders in their various communities.

While congratulating some of the newly appointed state and zonal executives for the award, Adebamigbe described the award as a well deserved.

He said the award was conferred on the awardees following their successful and good performance in the recent five day ‘leadership’ training they underwent in Abuja.

He said, “While congratulating the awardees on this well-deserved opportunity, you are to strengthen your loyalty to the constitution of the VGN, the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria and as well respect human right and rule of law”.

The State Commandant however warned them to desist from any act capable of dragging the good image of the group into the mud, saying any violation of the constitution may lead to the termination of their appointment.

Speaking on behalf of the other awardees, Bello Wasiu, Deputy State Commandant and Abiodun Oguleye, Ijesa Zonal Commandant appreciated the state and federal commandants for bestowing on them the award of recognition, promising to continue to be good ambassador of the organization.
