Death And Permanent Disability Caused By Facility Of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company

19th of September, 2018.
The Managing Director,
Ikeja Electric Distribution Company,
Secretariat Road,
Alausa Central Business District,
Ikeja, Lagos.

Dear Sir,

Death And Permanent Disability Caused By Facility Of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company to Mr. Sunday Ossai’s Family – Demand For Urgent Attention

On Friday, July 24th, 2018, at Dada Olowu Street, in Abule Egba area of Lagos State, a high tension wire belonging to IKEDC fell on a shop and electrocuted Mrs. Patricia Ossai and her three children (a boy and 2 girls).

It is indeed unfortunate that the boy, Chidi Ossai among the three children, was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital as a result of the electrocution.
We are aware, that your officials, met with the husband and father of the victims on the 25th of July, 2018 at the Hospital to assure the family that Ikeja Electric, will take full responsibility of the damages and loss the family had suffered from the accident. Your staff also informed the Managing Director of Hampard Hospital, where the victims were taken, to continue with treatment as your organization will be fully responsible for the bills.

To our dismay, our visit to the victims and subsequent meetings with Mr. Sunday Ossai (Next of Kin of Victims) and the Managing Director of Hampard Hospital has shown a total neglect by your Organization.

We are surprised that a reputable Corporate Organization as yours can be this callous to an innocent and poor family whom you have caused enormous tragedy. It is ironical and difficult to comprehend that, the family could be begging you for assistance on the irreparable damage and loss you have caused them, yet, your organization turned a blind eye to their appeal, which, you should ordinarily have been appealing and providing succors to.

As responsible organization in Nigeria, it is obvious that, due care was not taken by your organization in keeping your facilities in good shape, hence, this tragedy should have been averted.
Having failed in your due care, we expect that necessary arrangement should have been made to provide adequate support to the victims, who are currently languishing at the Hospital, waiting for death as their case has degenerated, due to your neglect and lack of fund to provide adequate care needed to sustain them.

We at Centre for Sustained Dialogue are afraid that, your keeping mum about this accident and total abandoning of the victims and their families is obviously a strategy by your organization, Ikeja Electric Distribution Company to absolve itself from this agony, you have brought upon the families of Ossai, hence, we wish to call your attention to this and demand you:

  1. A meeting should be conveyed with Mr. Sunday Ossai (Next of Kin of Victims), the Managing Director of Hampard Hospital and a Representative of Centre for Sustained Dialogue
  2. An inquiry assessment of  accident should be made available to the public, to avert further occurrence
  3. An undertaken letter to take full responsibility of bills that shall be incurred in ensuring full recovery of victims.
  4. Agreed compensation for the loss of life and permanent disability caused the family should be processed

As a reputable organization in Nigeria, we trust you will take this part of honor suggested by our organization to redeem these unfortunate circumstances, rather than making an attempt to hide at the back of a finger.
You are advice to act on this matter not later than 48 hours as your further neglect will be undesirable.

Yours in service
For: Centre for Sustained Dialogue
Comrade Akeem Omotosho
