Group Demand Appointment of Acting VC for OAU By Waheed Adekunle, Osogbo

The Concerned Academics, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, has called on the Federal Government to appoint an Acting Vice-Chancellor for the university pending the resolution of the crisis in the institution.

In a release signed by 15 departments of the institution, the group lauded the Federal Government for quick intervention in the crisis rocking the institution.

It commended the Federal Government for the dissolution of the council and suspension of the process that led to the appointment of Professor Ayobami Salami as the VC.

The OAU branch of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), had approached the court to challenge the process that led to the appointment of Professor Salami as VC of the institution.

The Federal Government had however dissolved the council and ordered it to hand over all the properties of the University in its care to the Registrar.

The Concerned Academics in the release, insisted that the purported statement issued by ASUU-OAU Chairman, which claimed that the union has endorsed the process of the appointment, did not emanate from the congress and hence, the document was "spurious, mendacious and misrepresentative in all its claims and insinuations."

"ASUU would always demand for due, free, fair and just process in any appointment in the University.

"No academic in OAU can validly claim that due process had not been injured by the manner and actions of the University's Governing Council since December last year.

"We therefore call on the visitor to kindly and urgently appoint for us an Acting Vice-Chancellor pending the resolution of all issues in court concerning the due process for the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor," the group stated
