Gani Fawehinmi of blessed memory said ''Society becomes discredit and fall into abysmal decadence when a pusillanimous and spineless personalities hijacked the instrumentality of power'' ,since January 2nd Occupy Nigeria movement started,the Nigeria state has employed many underhand and below the belt tactics to suppress legitimate,peaceful and constitutional rights of citizen to protest,ranging from subtle threat,miscreant harassment as in the case of Lekki toll protest,police brutality,maiming and killing innocent citizen without provocation,for the duration of the protest,from Lagos to Kano and Ilorin the story is the same, sorrow, tears and blood !
During the protest,my thought was never about my safety,but about the oppressed police that are been used against us,then the invasion or deployment of military in Lagos,the state Government and the federal started accusing each other on the constitutionality otherwise of the deployment even when we are not at war,my thought was that they will soon change to civilized and ethical ways to address legitimate demands of the people but few days later i got the shocker ; Elder statesmen and Senior citizen peaceful protest against military occupation of Lagos was disrupted by Police,they were harassed and heavily teargassed ,then I imagine if such brutality can be melted on senior citizen like Professor Ben Nwabueze SAN, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite and Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu by Soldiers deployed by the Federal Government ,this government will not hesitate to use bullets on some of us that are featherweight in struggle for genuine democracy.
Then the unthinkable happened,on Saturday the 18th of February 2012, civil society groups namely: Joint Action Front (JAF), Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) The Muslim Congress (TMC), Congress of Islamic Organizations (CIO), Justice, Peace and Development Commission (JDPC), The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja and Lagos Branches, and the oldest Political Party in Nigeria National Conscience Party (NCP) chose to remember the martyrs,the peaceful procession was led by matriarch of Fawehinmi revolutionary dynasty,Mrs Ganiat Fawehinmi ,and Prince of the dynasty Barr. Mohammed Fawehinmi who incidentally on a wheel chair,Dr Dipo Fashina,Comrade Agunbiade Tunde,and many other comrades,even after given them the unconstitutional police permission to embark on the procession,they were eventually brutalized,harassed,heavily teargassed,arrested and detained by police,then my mind resolve BRUTALITY IS NOW A STATE POLICY !
In a more civilized clime , the family of Gani Fawehinmi will not only be respected their opinion will be a reference point and a force to recon with in the society but unfortunately Gani was a Nigerian ,they only respect looters like Obasanjo,Babangida and Brutishlike Abacha and a serpentine like Jonathan;Dear reader,imagine you are a brother to that young man in Ilorin Kwara state who traveled to join the protest against the removal of fuel subsidy,he was full of energy but his life was untimely terminated by a trigger happy policemen,how will you feel?Assuming you are the young man ,who served the country after struggle to pay through His education,only to remain jobless and useless in the same country that enjoyed his force labour for one year ,how would you feel ?
Without been sound secessionist,I think Nigeria is due for restructuring,and the earlier those who are united in greedy and looting realize it ,the better for all of us, may God bless Nigeria,as for Gani Fawehinmi dynasty,may God continue to be with you as we join hand to end brutality in Nigeria, we shall overcomer
